How SOL to USD conversion works
Converting SOL to USD means calculating what an amount of Solana is worth at the current dollar rate. Solana divides to nine decimal places, and the amounts people convert span an unusually wide range: fractions well under a single SOL at one end, holdings in the hundreds at the other.
How the conversion is calculated
SOL amount × current SOL/USD rate = USD value
USD amount ÷ current SOL/USD rate = SOL amount
The rate is a live market rate, so the same amount converts to a slightly different figure from one minute to the next. That is the market moving, not an error.
Converting dollars to Solana
The converter runs in both directions, and on this pair the reverse is nearly as common as the forward one. Enter a dollar figure instead of a SOL figure and it returns the Solana that buys at the current rate, using the same rate either way. Because SOL divides to nine decimal places there is no minimum unit and no rounding problem at any size: $10, $100 and $1,000 each map to an exact amount of Solana.
Solana and USDC
USDC is the stablecoin most activity on Solana settles in, so SOL to USDC is a common conversion for people staying inside the network rather than cashing out to a bank. You can price it in two steps here: read the dollar figure above, then treat it as the USDC figure. USDC is designed to track the dollar, but a stablecoin's peg is a target rather than a guarantee, so the two can differ slightly.
Which sol this is
This page converts Solana's SOL, the token of the Solana network. It does not convert the Peruvian sol, whose currency code is PEN; for that you need a fiat currency converter. The two names overlap often enough that search engines mix them up, so it is worth stating plainly.
Converting is not selling
Using the converter only calculates a value. It does not execute a transaction or sell Solana. To turn SOL into a supported payout currency, see sell crypto.
