What is a WBTC wallet?
A WBTC wallet is the app you use to hold, send and receive Wrapped Bitcoin. The tokens never sit inside the app: your balance is recorded on a blockchain, and the wallet manages the private keys that let you move it.
Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) is a token backed 1:1 by bitcoin held with custodians, so its price tracks BTC. What you hold is a token that represents bitcoin on another blockchain, not bitcoin on the Bitcoin network.
A WBTC wallet is not a Bitcoin wallet. WBTC lives on networks such as Ethereum, Solana and Tron, so it uses that network's addresses: an Ethereum-style 0x address, a Solana address or a Tron address. It never uses a Bitcoin address.
| Your WBTC wallet handles | What that means |
|---|---|
| Private keys | They authorize every transaction and prove the WBTC is yours. |
| Receiving addresses | One per network. The address you share depends on the network the sender uses. |
| Networks | WBTC exists on several blockchains, so you pick one when you send or receive. |
| Token contract | The address that identifies real WBTC on each network. Copied tokens can reuse the name. |
| What backs it | Bitcoin held 1:1 in custody, by BitGo and, since 2024, a joint venture with BiT Global. The reserves are published on-chain. |
In the Bitcoin.com Wallet, WBTC exists on six separate networks, so receiving it means checking two things, not one: network + address.
WBTC is the oldest of several wrapped bitcoins. Others, such as cbBTC and tBTC, are backed and redeemed in different ways. The different types of wrapped bitcoin compares them.
