What is a USDC wallet, and is it a USD wallet?
USDC, or USD Coin, is a stablecoin issued by Circle and designed to hold a value of one US dollar. A USDC wallet is the app that manages the private keys controlling your USDC. It is not a bank account: there is no USDC login, no one to open an account with, and no dollars on deposit. What you hold is a token that Circle promises to redeem for dollars, sitting on a public blockchain, and the wallet is how you control it.
People search for a "USD wallet" or a "dollar wallet app" and usually mean one of two things. If you want a place to hold digital dollars that you control and can send anywhere in minutes, a USDC wallet is that. If you want to deposit cash from your bank and hold it as dollars, that is a bank or fintech account, not this. You cannot pay dollars into a USDC wallet directly: you buy USDC, receive it from someone, or move it in from an exchange.
USDC exists on many blockchains, and the same ticker on two networks is two separate balances. The Bitcoin.com Wallet holds USDC on Ethereum, Base, Polygon and Stellar. On Ethereum, Base and Polygon it is an ERC-20 token held at an address starting with 0x; on Stellar it is a Stellar asset at an address starting with G. Every network charges its own fee in its own coin, so a little ETH, POL or XLM has to sit in the same wallet before USDC can move. Transactions on Ethereum, Base or Polygon can be looked up on Etherscan, Basescan or Polygonscan, and Stellar transactions on a Stellar explorer.
Two things about USDC that no wallet can change. Circle publishes monthly reserve attestations and the peg has held closely in normal conditions, but USDC briefly traded at about $0.87 in March 2023 when one of the banks holding its reserves failed. And Circle can freeze USDC at specific addresses when it is legally required to, even in a self-custody wallet. Holding your own keys protects you from losing access to the wallet; it does not change what the token is. Our dedicated USDC page covers the reserves, the peg and the 2023 depeg in detail.
