Read an important announcement about Bitcoin from Bitcoin.com.
(Update: Bitcoin Core is less usable as money due to much higher fees and delayed transaction times. The Core team has also expressed an interest in keeping these fees high since they view BTC as a “store-of-value” and not something to be transacted on a daily basis. In contrast, Bitcoin Cash’s transaction fees cost pennies and payments can be validated even with zero confirmations. These facts make BCH the ideal cryptocurrency for sending and receiving money anywhere in the world.)
There are several steps to getting started with Bitcoin Core when you are new. It may seem overwhelming at first as there is a lot to take in, but once you have the basics down, traveling quickly down the BTC rabbit hole is easy; the challenge at that point is actually understanding all the complexities of Bitcoin Core. We’ll save that for another day.
In this guide, we will show you how to get your first bitcoin in just a couple of steps. Before we do, please make sure you have looked over our other guides as they are just as important. Specifically, you will want to make sure you understand how to choose the right Bitcoin wallet before buying so that you have a bitcoin wallet address and can store your bitcoin safely and securely after purchasing it.
Buying bitcoin with a credit card
To get started, simply visit the Buy Bitcoin page. Make sure that you have your BTC wallet address ready to send the bitcoin to after purchasing it. Once you have that ready, you can start to buy your first bitcoin.
The buy page will look like the image pictured inline. Enter the amount in USD you want to purchase, for example if you want to buy $50 worth of bitcoin (BTC). The page will auto-convert the price in USD to BTC. Click continue to go to the next step.
Please note: if you reside in an area not supported for instant credit card buying, you will be presented with a message advising you of this. If this happens, you can purchase bitcoin through another Bitcoin exchange via this list.
The next page will be the billing page, where you will enter in all your credit card billing information so you can submit your payment to purchase bitcoin. Most major credit cards, including VISA and MasterCard are accepted. Once you go through the steps entirely, the payment process is completed – that’s it, you purchased your first bitcoin! Easy, right? You are now a bitcoiner.
What happens next?
After the payment is processed, the amount of bitcoin you purchased will be sent directly to your Bitcoin address you provided earlier. Processing is typically completed within an hour, but sometimes can take longer than that depending your credit card company and the BTC transaction confirmation time. An email will be sent to the email address you provided to confirm along with the transaction details.
After you have received the bitcoin to your wallet address, you can do whatever you want with it. You can hold it as a speculative asset or you can spend it different places and get special deals, such as Purse.io or buy exclusive apparel, art, stickers, and other merchandise on the Bitcoin.com Store.
