What is a Bitcoin Wallet?
A Bitcoin wallet is an app, device or other tool that manages the private keys used to access and spend your BTC. The bitcoin itself is not stored inside the wallet. It remains recorded on the Bitcoin blockchain, while the wallet gives you control over the keys needed to move it.
Your wallet also generates Bitcoin wallet addresses. These are the addresses you share when you want to receive BTC. When you send Bitcoin, your wallet uses your private keys to authorize the transaction.
There are two main custody models:
- Self-custody wallets let you control your own private keys.
- Custodial wallets are managed by an exchange or other provider that controls the keys for you.
The Bitcoin.com Wallet is a self-custody Bitcoin wallet app, so you control the keys to your BTC while using the app to receive, send, buy, sell and manage Bitcoin.
