Ripple FAQ

What is the XRP Ledger?

The XRP Ledger (XRPL) is a decentralized, permissionless blockchain that facilitates fast, low-cost transfers of value worldwide. It features built-in tokenization, decentralized exchange (DEX) functionality, and support for smart-contract-like features through sidechains and Hooks. The ledger closes approximately every 3–5 seconds and can handle up to 1,500 transactions per second.

Who created XRP and the XRP Ledger?

The XRPL was launched in 2012 by David Schwartz, Jed McCaleb, and Arthur Britto, who aimed to build a more efficient digital-asset network than Bitcoin. Later that year, they partnered with Chris Larsen to form what is now Ripple Labs, the company that continues to develop enterprise payment solutions using XRP.

What is Ripple, and how is it related to XRP?

Ripple is a fintech company that develops payment and liquidity solutions such as RippleNet and On-Demand Liquidity (ODL), which use XRP to facilitate instant cross-border settlements. The XRP Ledger, however, is an independent open-source network that exists separately from Ripple, maintained by a global community of validators.

How does the XRP Ledger achieve consensus?

The XRPL uses a Federated Consensus model rather than mining or staking. Validators - independent servers run by organizations, universities, exchanges, and individuals - agree on transaction order every few seconds. When 80 percent or more of trusted validators (on a Unique Node List) reach agreement, a block (“ledger”) is finalized.

Is XRP mined or staked?

No. All 100 billion XRP were created at the network’s launch. There is no mining or staking mechanism. A small fraction of XRP (0.00001 XRP per transaction) is burned as a network-spam deterrent, slowly reducing total supply over time.

How many XRP are in circulation?

As of late 2025, roughly 53 billion XRP are in circulation. The remaining supply is held in escrow accounts controlled by Ripple Labs, which release up to 1 billion XRP per month to support ecosystem growth. Unused portions are returned to escrow.

What are XRP’s main use cases?

XRP primarily serves as a bridge currency for cross-border payments and remittances. It is also used in DeFi protocols, tokenized asset transfers, and payment-settlement solutions. Developers can issue custom tokens - including stablecoins and CBDCs - directly on the XRPL.

How is the network secured?

Security comes from the decentralized network of independent validators who collectively confirm transactions via the consensus algorithm. Because the XRPL doesn’t rely on mining, it is resistant to 51 percent attacks and consumes very little energy compared with proof-of-work chains.

What makes the XRPL environmentally friendly?

The XRPL’s consensus mechanism requires minimal computing power. The network is carbon-neutral, and its energy use per transaction is comparable to sending an email - making it one of the most sustainable blockchains in operation.

What is On-Demand Liquidity (ODL)?

On-Demand Liquidity is Ripple’s enterprise payment solution that uses XRP as a bridge between fiat currencies. It allows banks and remittance providers to settle cross-border payments instantly without the need for pre-funded nostro accounts, significantly reducing costs and capital lockup.

What is the difference between XRP, XRPL, and Ripple Network?

XRP is the native digital asset used for transactions. XRPL (XRP Ledger) is the underlying open-source blockchain. Ripple Network or RippleNet is the enterprise payment platform built by Ripple Labs that can use XRP for liquidity.

Can more XRP be created?

No. XRP’s maximum supply is capped at 100 billion. No additional tokens can be issued, ensuring a predictable supply model.

What is the Ripple–SEC case about?

In December 2020, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filed a lawsuit alleging that Ripple Labs conducted an unregistered securities offering with XRP. In July 2023, a federal court ruled that XRP sales on secondary markets (such as exchanges) do not constitute securities transactions, though the broader case continues on limited issues.

What role does XRPL play in CBDCs and tokenization?

Ripple Labs collaborates with central banks to pilot CBDC projects using XRPL’s tokenization and settlement capabilities. The network’s fast, low-cost design makes it well suited for issuing and transferring stablecoins, digital currencies, and real-world-asset tokens.

How can developers build on the XRPL?

Developers can access open-source SDKs and APIs in Python, Java, and JavaScript, along with detailed documentation at xrpl.org. The network supports native token issuance, escrow, multi-signing, and smart contract extensions through sidechains and the Hooks amendment.
